Moth Species Common in Worcester Homes

Two groups of moths account for most household infestations in Worcester: clothes moths and pantry moths. They target different things, behave differently, and require different approaches.

Clothes Moths

The webbing clothes moth is the more common of the two clothes moth species. Adults are small, roughly 7 to 8 mm long, with golden buff wings. They avoid light and are far more likely to run than fly, which is why homeowners often discover an infestation only after finding grazed or thinned areas on a wool garment. Larvae feed on wool, silk, fur, and feathers, spinning a silk blanket over their feeding site.

Casemaking clothes moth larvae are harder to spot because each one carries a portable silk-and-fiber tube. They’ll also attack felts, dried taxidermy, and in some cases dried herbs and seeds, making them a broader threat than most homeowners expect.

Pantry Moths

Indian meal moths are the pantry moth most commonly found in New England homes. Their wingspan reaches about 5/8 to 3/4 inch, with a distinctive two-tone wing pattern: the inner portion near the body is pale gray or tan, while the outer two-thirds are reddish-brown to copper-colored. Larvae contaminate grains, cereals, pasta, dried fruit, and pet food, often going unnoticed until webbing appears inside packaging or dry goods begin clumping together.

Moth development from egg through larva, pupa, and adult typically takes one to three months under normal conditions. In cool, undisturbed storage areas, that cycle can stretch to several years, which is part of why infestations in storage rooms or attics can continue long after the original source is removed.

Thinned or grazed surface areas on woolens, even before visible holes appear
Visible holes in wool, silk, fur, or feathered items
Silky webbing along carpet edges, under furniture, or inside closets
Adult moths running (not flying) when disturbed in a dark closet or drawer
Damage concentrated under collars, cuffs, or folds where body oils accumulate

Pantry moth warning signs:

Webbing inside food packaging or along pantry shelf corners
Clumped or sticky dry goods in an unopened container
Small larvae or adult moths near the kitchen or pantry

Moth Prevention Steps for Worcester Homeowners

Cedar blocks or hangers can help repel moths when the scent is fresh; sand them every few months to keep the odor active.

Transfer dry goods, including grains, cereals, pasta, and pet food, into airtight glass or thick plastic containers. Inspect new pantry purchases before placing them in storage, since infested products from a grocery store are a common entry point. Birdseed storage is worth checking as well, and is frequently overlooked.

A Note on Mothballs
Mothballs repel moths but don’t eliminate an existing infestation, and they’re toxic to children and pets. If used at all, they should only be placed in sealed, airtight containers where people and animals can’t access them.
