Centipedes vs. Millipedes: What You’re Seeing
Worcester homeowners often spot one of these pests and aren’t sure which it is. The difference matters because the two pests behave differently and signal different underlying conditions.
House Centipede
Elongated body, roughly 1 to 1.5 inches long, yellowish to dark brown with 15 pairs of long, banded legs. They move fast and rarely linger in open areas because they’re nocturnal. Finding one in your bathroom or basement at night is startling but not unusual. Centipedes are carnivorous, hunting flies, spiders, and other insects, so their presence inside often signals an existing population of prey insects. They can deliver a bite if handled, though it’s rarely more than mildly painful.
Millipede
Round, worm-like body, brownish-black, about one inch long with 30 or more pairs of legs. They move slowly and curl into a tight spiral when threatened. Millipedes are scavengers that feed on decaying plant matter. They generally don’t survive indoors for long, so large numbers inside are a sign of an active exterior population being pushed in from outside. When disturbed, they secrete a defensive fluid that can irritate skin.
